What Is an Electrical Panel? Every Name for It — and Why It Matters

Breaker box, fuse panel, load center, main panel — homeowners use a dozen names for the same piece of equipment. Here's what it actually is, what it does, and why it's the most important electrical component in your home.

When something goes wrong with the electricity in your home — a tripped breaker, flickering lights, a circuit that won't reset — the first place anyone tells you to check is "the panel." But most homeowners have never really been told what a panel actually is, why it matters, or how to know if it's doing its job correctly. This guide covers all of it.

All the Names for an Electrical Panel

The electrical panel goes by a lot of names — and they all refer to the same basic piece of equipment. You may have heard:

  • Breaker box — the most common term in everyday use
  • Circuit breaker panel — a more specific version of the same term
  • Fuse box or fuse panel — refers to older panels that use fuses instead of breakers
  • Main panel or main electrical panel — distinguishes the primary panel from subpanels
  • Load center — the technical/manufacturer term used in the industry
  • Distribution board — common in commercial and industrial settings
  • Service panel — refers to where the utility service enters the home's electrical system
  • Electrical panel — the general, catch-all term used by electricians and inspectors

The difference between a "breaker panel" and a "fuse panel" is meaningful: breakers can be reset after tripping, while fuses burn out and must be replaced. Fuse panels are found in older homes — typically built before the 1960s — and are generally considered outdated by today's standards.

What an Electrical Panel Actually Does

The electrical panel is the central hub of your home's electrical system. It does three things:

  1. Receives power from the utility — electricity comes into your home from the power company through service entrance cables and lands at the main breaker inside your panel.
  2. Distributes power to individual circuits — from the main breaker, power is split into individual branch circuits, each controlled by its own breaker. Each circuit feeds a specific area of your home: the kitchen outlets, the bedroom lights, the dryer, the HVAC system, and so on.
  3. Protects against overcurrent — this is the safety function. When too much current flows through a circuit — due to a short circuit, overload, or wiring fault — the breaker trips and cuts power to that circuit before the wiring overheats and becomes a fire hazard.

Think of it this way: the utility company sends electricity to your home, and the panel is the gatekeeper that controls where it goes and what happens when something goes wrong.

What's Inside the Panel

Open a modern electrical panel and you'll see:

  • Main breaker — a large double-pole breaker at the top that controls all power entering the panel. Switching it off cuts power to every circuit in the home.
  • Branch circuit breakers — the rows of smaller breakers, each labeled (ideally) to indicate what it controls. Single-pole breakers handle 120-volt circuits; double-pole breakers handle 240-volt circuits for appliances like dryers, ranges, and water heaters.
  • Bus bars — metal bars that distribute power from the main breaker to the individual circuit breakers.
  • Neutral bar — where the neutral wires from each circuit terminate.
  • Ground bar — where equipment grounding wires terminate, bonding the system to earth ground.

Why the Panel Is the Most Important Electrical Component in Your Home

Every outlet, switch, light fixture, and appliance in your home depends on the panel. It's the one component that the entire system flows through. A panel in good condition, with properly sized breakers and quality connections, keeps your home safe and your circuits running reliably. A panel in poor condition — whether from age, improper work, or manufacturing defects — creates real risk.

Electrical fires are one of the leading causes of house fires in the United States. A significant portion of those fires originate at the panel — from overloaded breakers that fail to trip, loose connections that generate heat, or breakers that have been bypassed or doubled-up improperly.

Signs Your Panel Needs Attention

  • Breakers that trip frequently — especially the same one over and over
  • A breaker that won't stay reset after you flip it back
  • Burning smell, discoloration, or scorch marks inside the panel
  • Buzzing or crackling sounds coming from the panel
  • Lights that flicker when large appliances run
  • The panel feels warm or hot to the touch
  • You have a fuse panel and keep blowing fuses
  • You're adding a large appliance (EV charger, hot tub, induction range) and the panel is already full

Panels With Known Problems

Not all panels are created equal. Two brands in particular have well-documented histories of failure:

  • Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) Stab-Lok panels — installed in millions of homes from the 1950s through the 1980s. These breakers have a documented history of failing to trip during overloads, which is a fire risk. Many insurance companies will not insure a home with an FPE panel.
  • Zinsco panels — also installed widely from the 1950s through the 1970s. Zinsco breakers can fail to trip, and the bus bar design allows breakers to melt onto the bar, making them impossible to switch off.

If your home has either of these panels, it's worth having it assessed by a licensed electrician.

How to Maintain Your Electrical Panel

Electrical panels don't require much routine maintenance, but there are a few things that matter:

  • Keep it accessible — panels should not be blocked by shelving, storage, or built-ins. Code requires a clear working space in front of the panel.
  • Keep breakers labeled accurately — if you don't know what each breaker controls, have it mapped out. Unlabeled panels make troubleshooting dangerous and slow.
  • Don't ignore repeated trips — a breaker that keeps tripping is telling you something. That something is usually an overloaded circuit, a failing breaker, or a wiring fault. Get it diagnosed.
  • Have it inspected if the home is older — panels in homes built before 1980 should be assessed by a licensed electrician, especially before major renovations or appliance additions.
  • Never double-tap a breaker — running two circuits into one breaker terminal (unless the breaker is specifically rated for it) is a code violation and a safety hazard. It's a common shortcut that electricians find regularly.

When to Upgrade Your Panel

Most modern homes are served by a 200-amp panel. Older homes may have 60-amp or 100-amp service, which can be insufficient for today's electrical demands. Signs you may need an upgrade include: your panel is full with no room for new breakers, you're planning to add an EV charger or other high-demand appliance, you have a fuse panel, or you have a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel.
