If you've been charging your EV from a standard household outlet, you already know the limitation: 120V charging adds about 4-5 miles of range per hour. For a long commute or a big battery, that means waking up to a half-charged car. A Level 2 (240V) home charger changes the math completely — most EVs charge fully overnight on a Level 2 circuit.
What Level 2 Actually Means
Level 2 refers to 240V charging, the same voltage used by your dryer or electric range. Most Level 2 home chargers run on a 50-amp dedicated circuit and deliver 9-11 kW of charging power, which translates to roughly 25-35 miles of range per hour of charging. For a Tesla Model 3, that's a full charge in about 8 hours. For a Chevy Bolt, about 7 hours.
The First Question: Can Your Panel Handle It?
Before anything else, a licensed electrician should assess your panel. Adding a 50-amp EV circuit to a panel that's already heavily loaded can cause problems. Many Twin Cities homes — especially those built before 1980 on 100-amp service — don't have the headroom to add a 50-amp circuit without a panel upgrade.
That said, many homes do have the capacity, and a good electrician won't recommend a panel upgrade unless it's actually needed. We run the load calculation first and give you a straight answer.
Charger vs. Outlet
You have two basic options for Level 2 charging at home:
- NEMA 14-50 outlet: A 240V outlet that your car's included charging cord plugs into. Lower upfront cost, slightly slower charging speeds, and more portable if you move.
- Hardwired Level 2 EVSE: A dedicated charging unit (Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint Home Flex, Emporia, etc.) wired directly to the circuit. Typically faster charging, smarter features (scheduling, energy monitoring, app control), and a cleaner install.
We install both. Which one makes more sense depends on your vehicle, your charging habits, and whether you want the smart features.
What About the Permit?
EV charger installations require a permit in Minnesota. This is non-optional — and it matters more than it might seem. Many utility company rebate programs require documentation of a permitted installation before they'll pay out. Xcel Energy, Dakota Electric, and others offer rebates that can offset a meaningful portion of the installation cost, but only if the work was done with a permit and passed inspection.

How Long Does Installation Take?
For a straightforward installation — panel has capacity, garage is nearby, no special run — most EV charger installs take 2-4 hours. If a panel upgrade is needed, plan for a full day. We can usually get you scheduled within a week or two.
