The honest answer is that it varies — and it varies a lot. A straightforward garage install on a house with a modern 200-amp panel and the electrical room nearby might run $400–$600. The same job on a home that needs a panel upgrade and a long conduit run to a detached garage could be $4,000 or more.
Here's what actually drives the price, so you know what questions to ask and what to expect when someone comes out to look at your home.
The Biggest Variable: Your Electrical Panel
A Level 2 EV charger requires a dedicated 240V circuit — typically 50 amps. If your panel has capacity and space for a new 50-amp breaker, the installation is straightforward. If your panel is full, obsolete, or undersized (100-amp service is common in Twin Cities homes built before 1980), you may need a panel upgrade before the charger can be added.
A panel upgrade adds $4,500 or more to the total cost. We run a load calculation before recommending one — plenty of 100-amp homes have enough headroom for a charger, especially if you're using a lower-amperage circuit.
How Far Is the Panel from the Garage?
Every foot of wire run adds cost. An attached garage with the electrical panel just inside the house keeps the run short and the price down. A detached garage, a charger on the far side of the house, or a long run through finished walls or underground conduit can add several hundred dollars to the labor and materials.
Outlet vs. Hardwired Charger
You can install a 240V outlet (NEMA 14-50) and use your vehicle's included cable, or have a dedicated Level 2 charging unit (EVSE) hardwired directly. The outlet approach costs less upfront. The hardwired charger typically charges faster, looks cleaner, and qualifies for more rebate programs. Both are permitted installations — neither is a shortcut.
The Permit Is Part of the Job
EV charger installation requires a permit in Minnesota. That's not optional, and skipping it has real consequences: some utility rebate programs — including Xcel Energy's — require documentation of a permitted installation. We pull the permit and coordinate the inspection, so you have the paperwork you need for any rebate application.
Rebates That Offset the Cost
Xcel Energy offers rebates for Level 2 charger installations for customers in their service territory. Some EV manufacturers also offer installation credits. The rebate amounts change periodically, so we check current program terms for every customer — but they can meaningfully reduce your out-of-pocket cost.
What a Typical Install Actually Costs
- Simple install (panel has capacity, attached garage, short run): $400–$700
- Moderate install (longer run, detached garage, or conduit through finished space): $700–$1,500
- Complex install (long underground run, subpanel needed, or other complications): $1,500–$3,000+
- Install requiring a panel upgrade: add $4,500 or more to the above
