A whole-home surge protector (also called a service entrance surge protector or Type 1/Type 2 SPD) is installed at your electrical panel, at the point where power enters your home. It intercepts large surges before they can reach any of your circuits. A whole-home device is rated to handle tens of thousands of amps of surge current — far beyond what any power strip can manage.
The best approach is a two-layer strategy: whole-home protection at the panel to catch large surges, combined with point-of-use protection at sensitive electronics to handle the smaller transient events that slip through.
