Your electrical panel is the hub of your home's power system. It takes the electricity coming in from the utility, splits it into circuits, and protects each one with a breaker. When the panel is working, you never think about it. When it isn't, the signs range from annoying to genuinely dangerous.
Most Twin Cities homes built before 1980 are still running on their original panels. Some of those panels have 40, 50, or even 60 years of service on them — and they were designed for a fraction of the electrical load a modern home puts on them. Here's what to watch for.
1. Breakers That Trip Frequently
A breaker that trips occasionally is doing its job — protecting the circuit from overload. A breaker that trips regularly under normal use is telling you something different: either the circuit is undersized for what you're running on it, or the breaker itself is worn out and tripping prematurely. Either way, it shouldn't be ignored.
The worst response to a tripping breaker is to simply reset it and move on. If it keeps tripping on the same circuit, the underlying problem hasn't gone away.
2. You Have a Federal Pacific or Zinsco Panel
Federal Pacific Stab-Lok panels and Zinsco panels are two brands with documented histories of breaker failures. The breakers in these panels have been shown to fail to trip under fault conditions — meaning they don't do their primary job of protecting the circuit when something goes wrong.
If you're not sure what brand your panel is, check the door. Federal Pacific panels typically say "Stab-Lok" on the breakers. Zinsco panels often have colorful breaker handles. If you have either brand, replacement is the right call — not eventually, but soon.
3. Your Panel Is 100 Amps or Less
A 100-amp panel was the standard for a long time. In a home without central air conditioning, an electric dryer, an EV charger, or a heat pump, 100 amps can be enough. But in a modern home with all of those things — and a home office, and a chest freezer, and a hot tub — 100 amps is tight.
The giveaway is running out of breaker slots. If your panel is full and you need to add a circuit for something new, you're out of options without an upgrade. A 200-amp panel gives you the capacity to grow.
4. Your Lights Flicker or Dim When Appliances Run
Some dimming when a large appliance starts up (like a refrigerator compressor or air conditioner) is normal. But lights that flicker constantly, or dim noticeably whenever you run the microwave, are a sign of a struggling system — either a circuit that's overloaded, a loose connection at the panel, or a service entrance that can't keep up with the load.
5. Your Panel Is Warm, Has Burn Marks, or Smells Like Burning
This one isn't a "keep an eye on it" situation. A panel that's warm to the touch, has visible scorch marks around breakers, or produces a burning smell has active heat damage. That heat is coming from somewhere — a loose connection, an overloaded breaker, or a failing component. Call an electrician the same day.
What to Do If You Recognize Any of These Signs
The good news is that a panel upgrade is a straightforward job for a licensed electrician. It's done in a single day, requires a permit and inspection (which we handle), and typically involves a few hours without power during the switchover. The result is a new panel with room to grow, full breaker labeling, and the peace of mind that comes from knowing your home's electrical system is up to the job.
