If you've ever noticed an outlet with two small buttons labeled "TEST" and "RESET" in a bathroom or kitchen, you've seen a GFCI outlet. Most homeowners know they exist — fewer know what they actually do, or that there's a second type of protection called AFCI that serves a completely different purpose.
GFCI: Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter
A GFCI monitors the flow of electricity through a circuit. Under normal operation, the same amount of current that flows out through the hot wire returns through the neutral. If those two values don't match — even by a tiny amount — it means some current is taking an unintended path. That unintended path might be through water. It might be through a person. The GFCI detects the imbalance and cuts power in about 1/40th of a second — fast enough to prevent electrocution.
Current code requires GFCI protection anywhere water is nearby:
- Bathrooms (all outlets)
- Kitchens (countertop outlets within 6 feet of a sink)
- Garages and unfinished basements
- Outdoor outlets
- Crawl spaces
- Boathouses and pool/spa areas
AFCI: Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter
An arc fault is a high-temperature electrical discharge that can occur when wiring is damaged, loose, or aging. Arc faults can ignite surrounding materials and are a leading cause of residential electrical fires. They happen silently, inside walls, without tripping a standard breaker — because the current involved is often below the breaker's trip threshold.
An AFCI detects the specific electrical signature of an arc fault and trips before a fire can start. Unlike GFCI protection (which appears at the outlet), AFCI protection is typically installed at the breaker panel. Current code requires AFCI protection in bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, and most living spaces in new construction.
Does Your Home Have Both?
GFCI requirements have been in the code since the 1970s, so most homes have at least some GFCI protection — though older homes may be missing it in areas where it's now required (garages, exterior outlets). AFCI requirements are more recent and are generally not required in older homes unless you're doing a remodel.
That said, adding AFCI protection to bedrooms in an older home is a reasonable safety upgrade, especially in homes with older wiring that's more prone to developing arc faults over time.
