When You Need a Dedicated Circuit — and What It Involves

A dedicated circuit serves a single outlet or appliance with its own breaker. Here's which appliances require them, which benefit from them, and how the work gets done.

A dedicated circuit is a circuit that serves only one outlet or one appliance — with its own breaker, its own wiring run, and nothing else on it. Shared circuits split their capacity among every outlet and fixture connected to them, which is fine for most lighting and general-use outlets. For high-draw appliances, it's a problem.

Appliances That Require a Dedicated Circuit

The National Electrical Code and most appliance manufacturers require dedicated circuits for certain equipment. If you're missing any of these, you're running out of compliance:

  • Electric ranges and ovens (typically 50-amp, 240V)
  • Electric dryers (typically 30-amp, 240V)
  • Refrigerators (15 or 20-amp, 120V)
  • Dishwashers (15 or 20-amp, 120V)
  • Microwave ovens (20-amp, 120V)
  • Washing machines (20-amp, 120V)
  • Garbage disposals (20-amp, 120V)
  • EV chargers (30–60 amp, 240V)
  • Hot tubs and saunas (50-amp, 240V)
  • Air conditioners (varies by unit size)

Appliances That Benefit From a Dedicated Circuit

Beyond code requirements, some appliances benefit from a dedicated circuit even when it's not required:

  • Home office equipment: A computer, monitor, router, and desk accessories pulling from a single shared circuit causes voltage fluctuations. A dedicated 20-amp circuit for a home office is a meaningful reliability upgrade.
  • Chest freezers: A freezer that trips a breaker because something else on the circuit overloaded it is a problem you don't know about until you open it.
  • Home theater equipment: Separating AV equipment from lighting and general outlets reduces interference and voltage fluctuation.
  • Workshop tools: Saws, compressors, and similar tools have high starting currents that can trip shared breakers.

What the Work Involves

Running a new dedicated circuit means pulling wire from your panel to the outlet location, installing the correct outlet or disconnect, and adding a breaker to the panel. If your panel is full — no open breaker slots — the project starts with either adding a subpanel or upgrading the main panel. We assess this upfront so there are no surprises.
