Breakers trip for a reason. That's the point — they're designed to cut power when something is wrong, protecting your wiring and your home from damage. A breaker that trips occasionally under a heavy load is normal. A breaker that trips repeatedly under normal use is a signal that something needs attention.
Here are the most common causes of a breaker that keeps tripping.
1. Circuit Overload
The most common cause. A circuit is overloaded when the total draw from everything running on it exceeds the breaker's rated amperage. A 15-amp circuit can handle about 1,800 watts continuously. A space heater, a hair dryer, and a few other items running at once can easily push past that.
The fix may be as simple as redistributing what you're running — plugging the space heater into a different circuit, for example. If the circuit is consistently overloaded under normal use, a dedicated circuit for the high-draw appliance is the right solution.
2. A Short Circuit
A short circuit happens when a hot wire touches a neutral wire — either inside an outlet, a device, or somewhere in the wiring itself. Short circuits cause a sudden surge of current that trips the breaker immediately. The breaker often trips the moment you plug something in or flip a switch.
Signs of a short: burning smell, discoloration around an outlet, or the breaker tripping the instant power is restored. Short circuits need to be found and fixed — resetting the breaker isn't a solution.
3. A Ground Fault
Similar to a short circuit, a ground fault occurs when a hot wire contacts a ground wire or a grounded surface. Ground faults are especially common in wet areas — bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoors. GFCI-protected circuits trip specifically to protect against ground faults, which are a shock and electrocution risk.
4. A Worn or Failing Breaker
Breakers don't last forever. A breaker that has tripped many times over many years can become sensitive and start tripping at loads it should handle easily. If a circuit is tripping under loads that clearly shouldn't trigger it, and there's no wiring issue, the breaker itself may need to be replaced.
5. Arc Fault (AFCI Breaker Tripping)
AFCI (arc fault circuit interrupter) breakers are designed to detect electrical arcing — the kind of sparking inside walls, inside damaged cords, or inside loose connections that can cause fires. An AFCI breaker that trips repeatedly may be detecting a real arc fault somewhere in the circuit, which is a fire risk that needs to be located and corrected.
6. An Overloaded Panel
If multiple breakers are tripping frequently across your home, the issue may be at the panel level rather than on any individual circuit. An aging 100-amp panel running a modern home's full electrical load can struggle. This is more common in homes that have added large loads — EV chargers, heat pumps, electric dryers — without a corresponding panel upgrade.
7. A Faulty Appliance or Device
Sometimes the problem isn't the wiring at all — it's whatever is plugged into it. A failing motor in an appliance, a damaged power cord, or a defective device can draw excess current or cause a short. If a breaker only trips when a specific appliance is running, start there.
8. Loose Wiring Connections
Loose connections at an outlet, junction box, or the breaker panel itself can cause intermittent arcing and tripping. This is harder to diagnose without opening things up, but it's a common cause of breakers that trip sporadically rather than consistently under load.
When to Call an Electrician
If a breaker trips once and doesn't repeat, it's probably not an emergency. If it trips repeatedly, trips immediately when reset, smells like burning, or you can't identify a clear cause, call an electrician. Repeatedly resetting a breaker without finding the root cause isn't safe — it's ignoring a warning.
